Pumping
Septic tank pumping in Hot Springs, AR
Pumping takes the sludge and scum out of the tank before solids reach the drain field. Most tanks need it every three to five years.

How often
How often does it need pumping?
The EPA puts it at every three to five years for most houses. A small tank, a full house or a garbage disposal pushes that sooner. A cabin that sits empty half the year can go longer.
If nobody knows when it was last done, go ahead and get it pumped. That's how you find out what shape it's in.
Before you call
Good to have when they call
- Your address, and the best number to reach you
- Where the tank is, if you know. A riser lid, old paperwork or the county permit helps. If it's under the deck, say so.
- Roughly when it was last pumped
- Anything that's going on, like a backup, a smell or slow drains
Pump day
Before the truck shows up
- Clear a path to the lid if you can. The truck has to get within hose reach, and that's a real issue on long lake driveways.
- Mention gates, dogs, and anything parked over the tank
Licensing
How to tell the truck is licensed
Anybody pumping septic tanks for pay in Arkansas needs a Septic Tank Cleaner license from the Department of Health.
The company name, license number and tank size have to be painted on both sides of the truck in letters at least 4 inches tall. The name and license number go on your receipt too.
