Aerobic

Aerobic septic systems in Hot Springs, AR

Aerobic units use an air pump to treat wastewater. They go on lots that can't take a regular drain field, and they need regular service.

  • The spray or discharge area stays wet or smells

Upkeep

They need regular service

An aerobic unit has an air pump, floats, a control panel and sometimes a chlorinator. That's a lot more to go wrong than a plain tank, so it needs regular service, not just pumping.

If your unit doesn't discharge to the surface, follow the manufacturer's service plan. Ask the company that calls you back about one.

Discharging units

If it discharges to the surface

A system that puts treated water out on the ground needs a state discharge permit (DEQ general permit ARG550000) on top of the health department permit, and the lot has to be at least 3 acres.

The state also requires a maintenance contract with a trained provider for as long as you have it, with checks at least every six months. You can't do the monitoring yourself.
