Common repairs

What usually needs fixing

  • Cracked or missing lids and risers
  • Broken or missing baffles inside the tank
  • The line from the house to the tank: clogged, crushed or full of roots
  • A drain field that quit taking water. You'll see standing water, smell it, or notice a strip of grass that's greener than the rest
  • Pumps and alarms, on systems that have them

Backing up now?

If sewage is backing up

  • Quit running water. Hold off on laundry and the dishwasher, and keep showers short.
  • Keep kids and pets off any wet spots in the yard
  • Send a request and a local company will call you back

Permits

Bigger repairs need a permit

Repairs to the tank or drain field need a permit from the county health unit. If it's an emergency, the work can start first, but the permit has to be pulled within 10 working days.

Installers working for hire have to be licensed. The sewer line from the house to the tank falls under the state plumbing code, and it's normally a licensed plumber's job. Not sure which one your problem is? The pumping company can usually tell you.
