A licensed local septic company will call you with an exact price. Your estimate goes with the request, so you won't have to explain it twice.
How it works
Where the numbers come from
Tank size. If you don't know it, we use the smallest tank Arkansas allows for that many bedrooms today: 1,000 gallons for up to 3 bedrooms, plus 250 gallons for each bedroom after that (see the tank size calculator). Older homes and lake cabins can have smaller tanks, so the permit or a pumping receipt beats our guess.
How often. From Oregon State University Extension's table of pumping intervals for year-round homes, by tank size and number of people. A garbage disposal adds solids, so plan on sooner.
Cost. National price ranges by tank size from Angi, as published by This Old House. A buried lid usually adds digging. Local prices vary, which is why the exact number comes from the company that calls you.
The only way to know a tank's real condition is to open it and measure the sludge. The EPA recommends an inspection about every three years.
